How to build your credit history
In order to enhance your financial situation you should begin with building a good credit history. If you are just beginning and are interested in establishing credit and continuing with a good credit history there are a few things to remember to promote high-quality credit.

Credit building typically begins when young adults are in college; many college students have credit cards for emergencies. Credit card applications are on most college campuses and many companies specifically target students for credit cards. In fact, within your first few weeks of school you can expect to receive up to 10 credit card solicitations.

Credit cards are a great way to establish credit. The key is to not overextend yourself or have multiple credit cards which you are unable to repay. In order to avoid overextending yourself and falling deep into debt read over the terms and conditions carefully. Make sure to read the fine print of each offer and select the best option for your situation.

If you prefer not to have a credit card, you can build credit by taking out a small loan. In most instances, you will need a co-signer, which, in most cases, is a parent. This is considered an installment loan and this is a great way to establish credit because they last for a few years and provide other lending institutions an idea of how you pay your debts over a long period of time.

Do not follow the misconception which is; having a lot of credit cards will build your credit history faster. This is not the case, in fact, it can hurt you as you will owe lots of money and can affect your debt to income ratio. One to two credit cards are practical, anything more, can negatively affect you.

If you are a college student and have thousands of dollars in debt; this does not look favorable to creditors. Creditors will view this as a credit risk as most students don’t have a substantial amount of income. However, if you have a good job and are making a relatively secure financial living, a couple thousand of dollars of debt is okay.
