Everyone needs a vacation from time to time, and most families are willing to save up the money to splurge on a really great trip. Because lets face it, when times are tough the only thing you can think about doing is getting away. But, you might be wondering, are there ways to save while you are on vacation? Do you really have to spend a ton of money to relax? Well, the great news is that you can save money on vacation and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to do it.

1.) Take cash with you. Especially if you are vacationing out of the U.S., it might be hard to find a place that takes a credit card or even locate an ATM. Plus, even if you are vacationing in the U.S., to use an ATM that is not affiliated with your bank, can really rack up some ATM usage fees. So, save yourself time and money, and just have your cash with you, however, don’t EVER carry all your cash on you. Store your money in a safe place in your room, or ask the hotel if they have a safe you can use, that way you only have to have on you what you will need for that day.

2.) Don’t be afraid to ask for discounts. Are you an AARP member, a veteran, an AAA member, a senior citizen? A lot of places you will visit on vacation offer discounts to these individuals, but sometimes you have to ask to find this out.

3.) Pack your snacks. Another great tip is to take snacks with you. You will be surprised how much this will save you and the convenience of it, especially with all the individual packages of chips, cookies, etc. that you can buy in bulk. Gas stations are usually over priced, since that is where they earn most of their profit. So, even if its just for the road trip or the plane ride, be sure to have lots of extra snacks on hand.

4.) Consider public transportation or walking. Hotels usually offer free parking to their guests, so consider leaving your car their and taking the bus. Some hotels even offer complimentary shuttle services, so you should definitely look into that as a means of getting around. If your beach front, why not walk to a nearby attraction or restaurant. Not only will you get to take in the beautiful view, but you will also save yourself some gas cash.

5.) Take advantage of your in-room coffee maker. Not only will you save money, because you won’t have to run out for coffee, but you can use it to have hot water to make a cup o’ soup or some Ramen noodles, you can also use hot water to make instant oatmeal or other instant cereal.

6.) Consider renting a cabin or condo if you will be staying for a week or longer. The nightly rental may be considerably cheaper than the nightly rental of a hotel room. Plus you can purchase groceries, and cook dinner instead of always having to eat out.

7.) Consider flying during the week, instead of on a weekend. Airfare rates are usually cheaper during the week. Red eye flights are also another great way to save money.

As you can see, there are several things you can do to help you save money on your next vacation, and most of them are easy to do. So, don’t feel like you have to spend a great deal of money on vacation, because you can still have a great time without breaking the bank.
