You’ve got your car, you’re ready to roar down the street, but before you are able to do that, alas! You have to get car insurance first! You check on different companies, and you are astounded by the expensive car insurance rates you see, and you worry that you might have to settle for something cheap, but less in quality. If this is your dilemma, you are not alone. Thousands of people face the same problem: they are in need of car insurance but sadly cannot afford it. You can, however, actually still have quality insurance and not pay more than you really have to.

The key to this is no other than – discounts. Of course, insurance companies already offer discounts as promos to attract more customers. There are, however, still many types of discounts you may avail of. Of course, in order to avail of such, you first need to know what they are in the first place.

You can get a 10% discount from your premiums when you are taking or have taken Defensive-Driving classes – classes that where you learn the basics of driving and a mastery of road signs and safe driving techniques. This is because companies see this as a merit of you being a safe driver and will most likely not end up in any road violations and / or accidents.

Good Student Discounts are given to students with a GPA 3.0 or higher. If you are one such student, as much as 25% can be knocked off your premiums. Amazing, right? So all those nights of burning the midnight oil weren’t useless after all.

On the other hand, if you’re on the other extreme of the age spectrum and are finally planning to retire, you can get Retirement Discounts for your insurance. Companies offer such discounts because they assume that a retired person will be less likely on the road since he or she will not have to go to work anymore. Upon retiring, inform your insurer so they could give you the corresponding discount. Furthermore, if you have a kid who is at least 100 miles away from you, for instance, in college, you could reduce a whopping 40% from your premiums. This is because companies see this as having a lower risk of car accidents and violations since younger people are deemed to be reckless drivers.

You can also avail Combination Discounts if your home and car are insured by the same company. You can slash more than 10% from your premiums if you do so. Also, some companies offer Loyalty Discounts when you stick with them for a year and more. Check their insurance manual for mechanics on this.

Insurance companies can be sneaky. They sometimes give discounts only to two or three of your safety gear. Be aware of how many safety gear you have – most cars have nine. If all of these are accounted for, you could slash at least 15% from your premiums. Be sure to avail of these Safety Discounts.

So next time you visit your insurer, or if you’re just planning to apply for one, remember these discounts. Note, however, that you would have to initiate asking for these discounts. Remember, if you do not ask, you might not have.
